I have a confession to make. I’m addicted to dying my hair. There I said it!
Since I was 14 years old and got those stripy blonde highlights put in, I swear they were all the rage back in the early ’00s, I’ve been hooked. I even went so far as working part time in a local hairdressers and putting my hand up as guinea pig for any type of new colour products.
I have been everything from brown, to pink, to red, to black and back again and over the years I have had a few favourite brands of hair dye.
Schwarzkopf was my first love, from their vibrant colour to the variety of shades they were always a winner in my eyes. As I colour my hair so much, I tend to home dye it (getting it done professionally would probably put me well and truely in the poor house) and I am always on the look out for new and easier ways to achieve a new colour while still maintaining the condition of my hair.
So when I came across Schwarzkopf’s new offering I was excited to give it a try. Now that spring is finally here I have decided to begin the transition back into warm red tones and couldn’t give up the opportunity to try the new Color Mask for this first transition.
Schwarzkopf promises a rich hair mask texture, no dripping, natural looking colour and perfect grey coverage. Thankfully I don’t need grey coverage just yet but I can happily say that they did not disappoint on the other promises.
The box includes a pair of gloves, a jar of developer, colour cream and a hair mask. Pretty standard stuff for a home colour kit. You add the colour cream into the jar of developer and shake, the instructions say to shake 40 times but I just shook it for a minute or two until it was well and truely mixed. Then it’s ready to apply.
The mixture is quiet thick and that stops it from dripping it everywhere during the application process. It also made it easier for precision purposes and made it easier to avoid getting it on my face. No matter how much I practice, I always get some on my face!
It is recommended to leave the product on your hair for 30 minutes, I always leave it on for longer, usually I get distracted doing something else and just forget about the time and as of yet the longer time period has not had any adverse effects (touch wood!).
This time however, I purposely left it in for an extra ten minutes as I was putting the ‘586 Warm Mahogany’ colour on my dark hair and wanted to give it extra time to develop. Once washed off I shampooed and conditioned as normal and then used the supplied hair mask. This left my hair lovely and soft while still maintaining a great shine.
The colour came out well despite the dark base colour it had to contend with and I was very happy with the results. However I did forget to take before and after shots, my bad, so you will just have to take my word for it. My hair is now a lovely, warm, red toned, mahogany colour, perfect for spring.
I will definitely be using this product again as it was easy to use and didn’t damage the condition of my hair. Schwarzkopf, I knew you wouldn’t let me down!
