Summer is almost here and while the weather may not be cooperating at the moment this has never stopped the optimism of the Irish before.
Some of the most optimistic people in all of Ireland are those close to my heart who live in fair old Dunmanway.
Boredom often sets in over the summer months especially to those of the younger generation who are still attending school and who may not be working for the holidays.
However Dunmanway is severely under-rated when it comes to activities and I hope to rectify that right now.
There is of course the numerous summer festivals which take place all over west Cork all within a short distance from our town.
Many of you may be in training for the 10K Road Race taking place on 16 June this will be sure to be a challenging but rewarding event.
The Agricultural Show is a traditional day out in July with games and healthy competition a must. This takes place on 7 July this year and is great for locals and tourists alike who want a real slice of country life.
The Ballabuidhe Races always draw a crowd with fun for the all the family. This festival takes place every August Bank Holiday and one thing is for sure it is never boring.
If these festivals don’t float your boat Dunmanway have many other activities open all year round but they are especially popular during the summer.
The playground is always a firm favourite among kids and adults alike especially since the addition of the outdoor gym. The swimming pool, tennis courts, pitch & putt course and astro turf soccer pitch are all located in the same area making up a fun and energetic day out.
Dunmanway also holds some of the finest fresh water fishing in Cork with many rivers and lakes in the locality.
We also have our very own horse riding school where you can not only learn the sport but also how to take care of both the animal and equipment.
Funmanway Adventure Land also provides the chance to try zorbing, paintball and kayaking in a fun and relaxing environment.
The town boasts many lovely picnic areas including the newly re-furbished lake-side garden area which is ideal for creating family memories.
Mountain biking enthusiast can challenge themselves with some of the best and most difficult courses in Ireland located just outside Dunmanway.
And for those that just want to relax and take in the scenery there are beautiful walks in the country, fabulous cafés, pubs and restaurants all located in our little town.
Summer is a time for fun and frolics so don’t forget to get out there and appreciate the town you come from.
